Cameron Park Zoo

Waco, Texas

Expecting a small zoo with a few exhibits, I was amazed and very impressed at what I actually found. Almost every animal's habit was spectacular. Exhibits were clean; animals had space, and as natural an environment as can be approximated in a zoo. The overall zoo was large, with plenty of room for growth. There were lots of shaded areas, walkways and benches to sit watch the animals and/or catch one's breath. (Or, in my case - change a lens or a memory card.)

I was particularly impressed with the Herpetarium and the African Savannah exhibit.

The new expansion, just completed and opened in July 2005, more than doubles the exhibits in the zoo. It is beautiful and very well done. I particularly liked the fact that most of the Texas shore birds were rescue birds. It gives the birds a second chance at a safe, comfortable life.

The grounds of the zoo are beautifully designed and maintained. It is obvious that the zoo takes great pride in their facility. Don't miss this zoo - it's worth the trip.
